Shannon to Tralee
I arrived in Shannon at 8:30am or so, local time. I didn't
get any sleep on the plane and suffered from jet lag
in a very severe way. However, I wanted to get down
towards County Kerry as quickly as possible. I got
to my rental car and insanely, decided to drive
the two hours or so down to Tralee. Keep in mind
that I was tired and had no practice whatsoever
on how to drive on the wrong side of the road.
Things turned out OK though and I didn't die on
the way down (the near-death experiences due to
driving came later on - in the next couple of days).
I arrived in Tralee around 2:00pm. I slept for four
hours and then went out and took some photos of the Dingle
Peninsula from across Tralee Bay. It was chilly (3-4 degrees
centigrade) and rainy. Not the most pleasant way to
start a vacation.
A couple of notes about the photos. First off, it was damn cold
and clammy on this day. It was drizzly, cold, windy: just
what you'd expect for Irish weather. In addition, the sky was
bright and the grass was very, very green. This makes for
massively high contrast. The slide film had a slightly
difficult time with it and the scanner had an even more
difficult time with it. If I knew what I was doing with
my slide scanner right now I might have been able to squeeze
out a bit more information that would make the image a little
brighter (and it's not so easy as just setting the Brightness
and Contrast levers) but until I figure out the trick to
digital image editing you're going to have to put up
with these shots. What's more (yes, there's more) these
images were taken sometime around 6:30pm local time. The sun
was already on its way down and I didn't have that much
to work with. Kind of adds to the gloominess of the
scene.
