Galway: Clonmacnoise.

Technically, Clonmacnoise is nowhere near Galway. I took a day trip to the 'midlands' of Ireland just east of Ballinasloe. Clonmacnoise is a very, very old monastic settlement on the Shannon River formed sometime around 600 A.D. There a lot of neat old churches and high crosses as well as a couple of towers.

And finally - some actual photos of Clonmacnoise. And for those of you playing at home, Clonmacnoise is pronounced as 'clon', as in, well, Clon similar to the word 'dawn'. 'mac' like Big Mac or if you're in Amsterdam: 'Le Big Mac'. And 'noise' like those damn kids are making too much noise.

Just a neat window from one of the temples at Clonmacnoise. I'm angry at myself for clipping the top of the window though.

Sorry, I don't have anything to add here.

This is a replica of the original high cross that was erected sometime around 600 A.D. The real one is inside the museum show in a photo below. The curators were afraid of more erosion since this was sandstone and the elements had already started wearning away the details. The solar 'umbra' behind was more or less necessary as taking a shot full-on would probably have resulted in a bit of lens flare. I rather like the result.

This is a real high cross (one of several in this museum).

One of the church ruins. The stones at the bottom of the frame are actually gravestones if I recall correctly.

A view into one of the churches. Gated off presumably to keep vagrants like me from tromping all over the old stuff and really making it a ruin.

Lots of windows through the temple walls. I have a distinct feeling this image would have been more impressive either at sunrise or sunset or during a rainy day.

Had enough of Clonmacnoise?

Now, these were taken after I'd made my roadtrip to the Irish midlands and Clonmacnoise and was back in Galway.

Looking southwest across Galway Bay towards The Burren standing in Salthill. Taken with a red filter.

More or less the same as above. I should probably crop this better to remove that ugly building on the right hand side of the picture. Also taken with a red filter (I think).
